Goosebumps, Tales from the Crypt, American Horror Story… On TV and on other platforms, scary stories for young and old are legion. And according to the statistics portal Statista, one in three French people are fond of these chilling tales. In real life too, we like to scare ourselves by telling each other our best stories during evenings under the stars or by the fire. As Halloween approaches, Libé has compiled for you testimonies from people who recount a major scare. Today, Valentin, 38, who works in the cultural sector in Réunion, recalls how his imagination ran wild during a night of hiking.
“In August 2023, I’m setting off alone for three weeks to do the great Jura crossing. I regularly bivouac alone, so I’m used to solitude. A few days before the end of the route, I arrive at a gîte, which I had spotted in advance. Usually, I sleep in my tent or under the stars, but this time, I’m thinking it might be cool to spend the night sheltered, in solid ground, not having to pitch my tent.
